Interviews From Hell

By Amanda Pavis

Most interviews pass off without incident and people may be a little anxious, but after all that is almost a necessity isn't it? But what can potentially go wrong at an interview and how do you avoid these things happening?

Well to start off with, avoid danger zones. These include accepting tea or coffee, if you are asked if you want one: you may be nervous and if so you are more likely to spill your drink, so go for a coffee afterwards, rather than have one at interview. Don't have a drink to settle your nerves before you go: smelling of drink will put the interviewers right off.

Do not assume that the interviewing panel will only be one or even two people. Even if the position is a temporary job or you are going to be working for a recruitment agency, you may still be interviewed by three or four people or even more. So don't make assumptions about how many people will actually be there!

If you start to talk about your personal life, or make judgemental comments then beware, this could turn into the interview from hell. One woman at interview criticised the secretary outside, only for the chief interviewer to point out that the said secretary was actually his wife. The interview went down hill after that.....

Turning up more than a minute late will turn any interview into the interview from hell, so always, but always be on time and make sure that you don't breathe garlic or curry fumes all over the interviewing panel.

Never flirt with a member of the interviewing panel, because you may well alienate other people who are interviewing and often appointments are made by consensus. So even if one of your interviewers is drop dead gorgeous, save the flirting until you are employed!
